Power Plays Weekly Roundup
August 30, 2024

It was a sloppy, choppy week.
Nvidia's (NVDA) earnings report was strong but not strong enough to ignite the semis or market overall.
And today's PCE report was light, but not light enough to drive up the small caps in any meaningful way.
That said, tech is showing some relative strength, which is not a bad way to close out the week.
But let's remember this is the last week of summer which is always tricky because so many people are away from the screens.
We could see big changes by the close today.
That would fit the theme of this slippery and predatory tape.
I'd be looking to take profits in idea fast rather than adding on strength.
I did find three new Power Plays this week (RIVN, SQ, AFRM) which surprised even me.
But these are all unique situations because they are all related to earnings gaps and showing relative strength in the market.
So you can think of that as a cluster of special situations.
While we try to average about one new idea per week, sometimes we come up with extras like these for you.
Now let's go over our names:
Meta (META) has been frustrating because it always looks like it's ready to break out, and then it pulls back. I would not chase it on strength. It's only a buy on dips.
XBI: biotech looks poised to rally with the backdrop of a more accommodative Fed. The slightly light PCE report today should help that perception. I want to see a hard move over $103 to ignite this ETF, though it may need a few days to repair Thursday's candle.
Rivian (RIVN) came back on the radar this week. It is building in this $13.60 to $14.70 range. As long as it holds the $12.96 gap area, it's fine.
Block (SQ) joined Power Plays Thursday as a play on the strength in Upstart (UPST) and Affirm Holdings (AFRM). It will also benefit from potential strength in Bitcoin.
Affirm Holdings (AFRM): I added this early Friday because of just how well it is holdings its earnings gap. It also has sizable short interest which could drive a squeeze if the stock really gets going.
