{"id":69860,"date":"2023-08-11T09:01:54","date_gmt":"2023-08-11T13:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.t3live.com\/?p=69860"},"modified":"2023-08-11T09:01:54","modified_gmt":"2023-08-11T13:01:54","slug":"coffee-with-greta-wholesale-inflation-surprise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.t3live.com\/2023\/08\/11\/coffee-with-greta-wholesale-inflation-surprise\/","title":{"rendered":"Coffee With Greta: Wholesale Inflation Surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/t3trading.com\/cwapt-scott\">Register now<\/a> for next week's free Q&A event on LinkedIn with Scott Redler!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>DJIA Futures: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-80 (-0.2%)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SPX Futures: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-17 (-0.4%)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NASDAQ Futures: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-107 (-0.7%)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good morning friends!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Futures are falling after the release of hotter-than-expected inflation data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s get right to it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wholesale Inflation Runs Hot<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wholesale inflation pressures rose more than expected in July.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019 producer price index rose 0.3% monthly and 0.8% year over year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That was higher than economists\u2019 expectations for +0.2% monthly and +0.7% annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The core PPI was also hotter than expected, up 0.3% monthly and 2.4% year over year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Economists were expecting the core PPI to rise 0.2% monthly and 2.4% annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PPI gauges the costs that goods and services producers receive for their products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a leading indicator for CPI as retailers, restaurants, and other businesses then pass down those costs to consumers in their prices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yields Jump After PPI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treasury yields are rising after the release of that hotter-than-expected PPI data.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2-year yield is up 4 basis points to 4.88% while the 10-year yield is up 2 basis points to 4.14%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s inflation data is key in the Fed\u2019s fight against inflation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Central Bank has vowed to be data-dependent at the September meeting with the door open for another 25 basis point rate hike if needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CME Group\u2019s FedWatch Tool currently shows 88.5% of traders expecting the Fed to keep rates unchanged at that meeting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chip Stocks Fall<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chip stocks are continuing to pullback ahead of the open following the Biden Administration\u2019s new investment ban in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>VanEck Semiconductor ETF <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(SMH) is down 1.2%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Nvidia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(NVDA) shares are falling 1.4% with <\/span><b>Advanced Micro Devices <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AMD) down 1.1%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President signed an executive order this week to regulate new U.S. investments in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The order targets semiconductors and microelectronics, quantum computing, and certain AI capabilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The restrictions are expected to be implemented next year.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Register now for next week&#8217;s free Q&#038;A event on LinkedIn with Scott Redler!
