{"id":4441,"date":"2016-07-26T12:56:31","date_gmt":"2016-07-26T12:56:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thet3trader.com\/?p=4441"},"modified":"2016-07-26T12:56:31","modified_gmt":"2016-07-26T12:56:31","slug":"apple-earnings-preview-is-the-news-bad-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.t3live.com\/2016\/07\/26\/apple-earnings-preview-is-the-news-bad-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple Earnings Preview: Is the Bad News Bad Enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tech superheavyweight <strong>Apple<\/strong> (AAPL) reports earnings after the close today, and as always it's the talk of the town for tech investors.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a quick summary of Wall Street's consensus expectations: (data from Bloomberg and Factset)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sales:<\/strong> $42.0559B (Apple's guidance was $42 billion)<br \/>\n<strong>Earnings <\/strong>$1.386 per share<br \/>\n<strong>Gross margin: <\/strong>37.945% (guidance was 37.750%)<br \/>\n<strong>iPhone units:<\/strong>\u00a0~40 million<\/p>\n<p>And for next quarter, analysts expect:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sales:<\/strong>\u00a0$45.537B<br \/>\n<strong>Earnings\u00a0<\/strong>$1.593 per share<br \/>\n<strong>Gross margin:\u00a0<\/strong>38.361%<\/p>\n<p>Now, let's take a broader look at overall expectations for Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, 82.7% of analysts rate it a buy.<\/p>\n<p>Let's compare that to other major large-cap tech names:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook <\/strong>(FB): 88.0% rate it a buy<br \/>\n<strong>Google <\/strong>(GOOGL)<strong>: 90%<br \/>\nSalesforce.com<\/strong> (CRM): 91.3%<br \/>\n<strong>IBM<\/strong> (IBM): 25.9%<br \/>\n<strong>Oracle<\/strong> (ORCL): 56.1%<\/p>\n<p>The average target price on Apple is now $121.91, down from $150+ last November.<\/p>\n<p>And for the full year, analysts now expect revenues of $215 billion, down from nearly $250 billion last fall.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the trend in this chart: (red is 2016 revenue expectations, white is stock price)<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4444\" src=\"http:\/\/www.t3live.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/AAPLREVEXP.gif\" alt=\"AAPLREVEXP\" width=\"736\" height=\"552\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So it's safe to say that expectations have come down quite a bit.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps most tellingly, yesterday, BGC analyst Collin Gillis <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-07-25\/analyst-downgrades-apple-and-says-it-has-peaked\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-07-25\/analyst-downgrades-apple-and-says-it-has-peaked\">downgraded<\/a><\/strong> the stock to a sell, saying &#8220;Our opinion [is] that Apple has peaked under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That's not as dramatic as the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/12292905\/1\/fire-tim-cook-too-little-too-late-too-stupid.html\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.thestreet.com\/story\/12292905\/1\/fire-tim-cook-too-little-too-late-too-stupid.html\">&#8220;Fire Tim Cook Era&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> which marked the last major Apple bottom:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4443\" src=\"http:\/\/www.t3live.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/firetimcook.jpg\" alt=\"firetimcook\" width=\"679\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.t3live.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/firetimcook.jpg 679w, https:\/\/blog.t3live.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/firetimcook-300x76.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 679px) 100vw, 679px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But it's certainly in the same ballpark in terms of line of thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, Apple is very cyclical at this point, and you want to buy when the news stinks.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I think the bulls have the edge with Apple here.<\/p>\n<p>Even if Apple misses, the downside may be limited because a decent amount of negativity is being priced in with the stock trading at 11 times earnings with a 2.2% dividend yield.
